Class Descriptions

POTC offers a comprehensive training program for all levels of dogs. Note that some ages are recommended and others are required.  Since no two dogs are alike, the recommended age is simply a guideline.

Not all classes listed below are offered year round.

Public Classes

Puppy

This course is designed to get dog owners and their puppies off to a good start!  Emphasis is placed on responsible pet ownership including proper puppy care and safety concerns.  Building confidence, core skills, and basic commands are introduced.  Help is also given with house training, grooming, chewing issues & other household concerns.

Recommended dog age: 10 weeks – 6 months (following all required puppy vaccination schedule – rabies not required if puppy is too young)

Manners

This course is recommended as a follow-up for puppies who just finished our Puppy Class or ANY dog who has never had any group training. It is designed for good manners at home and in the community.  This class teaches cores skills so dogs will focus on handler, as well as not to jump up, come when called, walk on a loose lead, sit/down/stay and to accept extensive handling and touching.

Obedience for Pets *NEW*

Basic obedience training is designed as a follow-up to Manners Class (or Puppy Class by instructor recommendation) to reinforce skills learned in those previous classes. Core skills are practiced and impulse control challenged by added distance, duration and distractions. Emphasis is placed on creating a relationship with your dog for better behavior and preparation for encounters in the community, as well as future dog training activities.

Prerequisite: Manners Class (or Puppy class by instructor recommendation)

Obedience for Performance

Basic formal obedience training based on AKC Beginner Novice exercises includes proper heeling in various directions and paces, sit, down, stand, stay, figure 8, recall and other obedience skills adding duration and distractions. Emphasis is placed on handler skills.

Obedience Introduction to Open/Utility Introduction

This class will introduce the open obedience exercises, including
the dumbbell retrieve, drop on recall, command discrimination, high
jump, and broad jump, and provide an intro to Utility go outs,
signals, and moving stand.

Recommended dog age: Dogs 6 months or older

Prerequisite:  Basic beginner obedience skills
Limit: 10 teams

Obedience Champions

This course is designed for advanced ring preparation and problem solving for CD, CDX, and UD

Recommended dog age: 1 year and older
Length: 8 weeks
Prerequisite: Recommended Novice Obedience skills and Instructor Approval

Rally

There is strong emphasis placed on heel position while navigating a course with signs which indicate different exercises.  Rally develops teamwork between an owner and their dog. This class is customized according to the needs of the students. It can incorporate any level of AKC, UKC, and WCRL course set ups.

AKC Rally  – Master Level

For those teams with an AKC RAE title: the AKC rally Master level allows a team to attain a Rally Championship title (RACH) effective Nov. 1, 2017.  This class will cover the new AKC Rally Master Level signs.

Prerequisite: AKC RAE or RE title, or approval by instructor

Rock & Rhythm Rally 

This new class combines Rally exercises, tricks, and freestyle moves set to music. You will learn some Master Rally moves, some tricks & freestyle moves, and create some moves with your own style. Like a Rally course, you will follow signs to complete your exercises; however, we will queue the music as you proceed through the course! This class is designed to be fun for you and have a great time WITH your dog! Level: Easy to Intermediate

Recommended dog age: 1 year and older
Length: 8 weeks
Prerequisite: Obedience 1 and/or a dog knows sit, down, stay, and heel.

AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Prep

The first 3 weeks of this class will be spent practicing the skills necessary to pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluation in a fast paced environment.  The fourth week of class will include the evaluation by a certified AKC CGC Evaluator.  Handler/dog teams should be able to demonstrate loose leash walking, sit/down/stay, and recall.  Dogs should be able to tolerate distractions, good manners while greeting and being petted/groomed and supervisor separation for handler for 3 minutes.

Prerequisite: No previous classes required; however, skills listed above should already be practiced.

Foundation Skills for Therapy Dog Teams

This class is designed to prepare the therapy dog team to pass the  the Alliance of Therapy Dogs test; however, the test is not given.  The skills learned during this class are based on existing core skills such as wait, leave it, sit, down, and walking on a loose leash.  Foundation skills such as visiting (approaching and allowing handling by strangers) without jumping or licking and approaching and encountering medical equipment that moves or can be noisy are also practiced.  This course also includes advice/recommendations given from our members who are registered Therapy Dog teams to create realistic and successful participation in any Therapy Dog program. Representatives from various area Therapy Dog Programs present on their services. *Screening required*

Length: 4 weeks
Prerequisite: CGC recommended by not required. Handler/dog team can demonstrate core skills such as focus, leave it, wait, sit and can walk on loose leash.  Dog enjoys human contact and can ignore or be redirected from other dogs.

Beginner Agility Class

Agility is an energetic and popular sport for dog and handler. While in the ring, both will run full speed while performing over A-Frames, Dog Walks, See-Saws, Tunnels and Jumps. Intermediate Agility Class

This course is for the dog that has completed beginner agility. It builds on the skills previously taught.  The handler also learns teamwork, sequencing and handling skills.  Email webmaster@potcdogs.com for information and registry.

Fundamental Agility Commands

Have you ever felt you’re winging your agility training Do you want to build your communication skills with your dog? If so, this is the class for you.
Using four (4) low set jumps the fundamental agility commands of go, here, out, turn, around, push and wrap will be practiced. These are foundation classes that handlers with no experience can do, but also for experienced handlers to use to refresh their skills

Prerequisite: Well behaved, know basic obedience – no previous agility training needed
Bring with you: light-colored treats.

Basic Jump Grids

Is your dog dropping jumps or even avoiding them?
The various basic jumping skills dogs and handlers need to know will be practiced. Examples: proper jump form, extension, collection, change of lead.
These are foundation classes that handlers with no experience can do, but also for experienced handlers to use to refresh their skills.

Limit: six (6) handler/dog teams

Freestyle

K9 Freestyle class involves teaching your dog cool tricks geared to their abilities, and performing them to various types of music. Dogs of all ages love this class because their owners are having fun, and they are learning something new. This class is a creative way to strengthen your bond with your dog.

Prerequisite: Beginner Obedience (from any training facility) and Tricks is helpful

Conformation

Dog shows, or “conformation” events concentrate on the distinctive features of purebred dogs. These shows give an opportunity to display each breed in their true form. POTC is offering classes for individuals interested in presenting their dogs at AKC or UKC conformation shows.

Ready to Show

Take the guesswork and anxiety out of what to expect at a trial! We will help you prepare yourself and your dog for trials in all venues of Rally and Obedience.  You will learn how to complete the proper paperwork, the rules of each venue, and the expectations of the judges.  You will practice show ring etiquette and the techniques used for the ring.  All breeds welcome.  No prerequisite, no age requirement. This class is open to POTC Club members and the public.

AKC Tricks

We welcome ANYONE with any breed of dog who wants to learn tricks for fun, or as part of therapy or helper dog training.  However, this class is primarily intended to prepare handlers for the Novice level of the new AKC Tricks Titling program being offered through the CGC division, which officially launches May1.   When the course is complete, those who feel ready can be evaluated for the AKC Novice Trick (TRKN) title by the instructor or another CGC Evaluator (dog applying for the title must have an AKC number – full registration, PAL, or Canine Partner).  For more information about the title: http://www.akc.org/trick-dog/

Because this is an “all positive” class and many tricks must be taught via shaping, the class will be taught with clickers.  Handlers should bring a clicker and lots of tiny treats to class.  Complete class form and bring first night of class.
